Can I use natural or over-the-counter treatments for my dog?

You can. OTC products are probably safe, but we're not sure they're very effective. The medications that we use here—predominantly Interceptor, Credelio, and Bravecto—are medications that have had an extreme amount of research and safety studies and gone through the process of going through the FDA to ensure they are effective. That's the products that I would use.

There are all kinds of anecdotes out there made of brewers yeast and essential oils. I don't know; there are just tons of them out there. They don't work at all—you're wasting your money, and sometimes they're even more dangerous than they sound. Just because they're natural doesn't mean they're safe, effective, or okay to use. The best thing is to come in here and have us help you pick out the best preventative and treatment plan for your dog and cat.

I'd say no. If there were effective, natural, over-the-counter non-prescription treatments for this, we wouldn't have the significant number of problems with these diseases and parasites that we do. I would not recommend it. I've seen quite a few dogs come down with heartworms after using natural remedies at home.
