Sean Penn DVM

Veterinarian

Dr. Sean Penn was raised in Stillwater, Oklahoma, near the campus of Oklahoma State University. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from OSU in 1993 and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1997, also from OSU. While in veterinary school, he served as the youngest member ever (at the time) on the Board of Directors for the Stillwater Humane Society. After graduation, Dr. Penn moved to Arizona to complete an intense, 1-year training internship program in small animal medicine and surgery. He then went on to spend the next 10 years working as an emergency veterinarian at a local animal emergency hospital.

In 2006, Sean became certified as a diplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) with a specialty in Canine and Feline Practice and passed a recertification exam in 2016. The ABVP is one of 21 veterinary specialty groups, accredited by the American Board of Veterinary Specialties, which gives recognition of excellence in clinical practice through the certification of species-oriented specialists.

In 2008, a desire to work during the day prompted Dr. Penn to start offering his services as a relief doctor. He has provided relief work for over 70 hospitals in Arizona, and served as Medical Director for 4 years at a large 6-doctor hospital in central Phoenix. In 2012 Dr. Penn began practicing at Horizon Animal Hospital.

In 2011, Dr. Penn co-authored the “Anesthetic Guidelines for Dogs and Cats”, published by the American Animal Hospital Association.

His professional interests include: maintaining the health and wellness of his 4 legged patients through ultrasound, surgery, internal medicine, urology, and clinical pathology; as well as furthering his knowledge of the ever-changing field of veterinary medicine.

When he finds time outside of caring for dogs and cats, including his own pets, he enjoys mountain biking, hiking, snow skiing, golfing, and following sports such as the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals, and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

He is happily married and has two adult children who are graduates of ASU.
