Impalement and penetrating injuries in pets involve a foreign body being lodged, often deeply, in an animal. This can occur in body cavities such as the chest or abdomen or in deep wounds where the skin is breached.
Common examples for dogs include injuries from arrows, crossbow bolts, dog fights, and gunshots. Pets can also suffer impalement injuries by falling onto sharp objects or running with sticks in their mouths that jab into the ground.
These injuries often lead to serious internal damage, and immediate veterinary attention is essential. Sedation and/or general anesthesia may be required to determine the extent of the injury. Not all foreign objects are visible on X-rays, so advanced tests like ultrasounds or MRIs might be necessary. Furthermore, parts of the foreign object may remain lodged within the pet even after removal, potentially causing problems weeks later.
What to Do:
- Keep the pet calm and wrap them in a blanket.
- Muzzle your pet to prevent potential bites.
- Try to immobilize both the pet and the foreign body, if it's still present, to prevent further damage.
- If the injury is in the chest or the chest has been damaged, listen for signs of air-sucking or whistling around the wounds. If there appears to be an open wound in the chest, cover it with plastic wrap applied over a layer of petroleum jelly, sterile lubricant, or antibiotic ointment.
- If possible, shorten the foreign body, leaving about 3 to 6 inches protruding from the pet.
What NOT to Do:
- Do not attempt to remove the foreign body yourself.
- Do not allow the pet to move around.
- Do not move the foreign body while trying to shorten it.
- Do not delay seeking veterinary attention, even if the wound appears minor. There can be extensive unseen damage requiring immediate medical care.
Impalement injuries can be serious, and professional veterinary care is crucial to ensure the best outcome for your pet.
