Diseases and Conditions: Bones – A Hidden Danger for Dogs

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns pet owners about the potential dangers of giving bones to dogs. While some people believe giving dogs large bones to chew on is okay, it can lead to serious health problems for your pet.

Pet Illnesses Reported

The FDA has received about 35 reports of pet illnesses related to bone treats, including various bone types such as "Ham Bones," "Pork Femur Bones," "Rib Bones," and "Smokey Knuckle Bones." These bone treats are commercially available and processed, and packaged specifically for sale as dog treats. The reports indicated the following illnesses in dogs that have consumed bone treats:

  1. Gastrointestinal obstruction: Bones can cause blockages in the digestive tract, which can be life-threatening and require emergency surgery.
  2. Choking: Dogs may choke on bone fragments or splinters.
  3. Mouth and tonsil injuries: Bone treats can cause cuts and wounds in the mouth or on the tonsils.
  4. Vomiting and diarrhea: Consumption of bones can lead to digestive issues.
  5. Bleeding from the rectum: Bones can cause damage to the digestive tract and result in bleeding from the rectum.
  6. Death: Approximately eight dogs reportedly died after eating bone treats.

The FDA also received seven reports of product problems, such as bones shattering when pulled from their packaging.

Things You Can Do

  1. Avoid giving bones to your dog: Bones, especially cooked bones, can be hazardous to your pet's health. Opt for safer chew toys or treats made from different materials instead.
  2. Supervise your dog: Always supervise your dog when giving them a new chew toy or treat to ensure they don't choke or encounter any problems.
  3. Be cautious with trash: Be mindful of what you throw away, as dogs may scavenge bones from the kitchen trash.
  4. If you suspect your dog has consumed bones or exhibits any unusual behavior after consuming treats or toys, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Reporting a Problem

If you experience any issues with a pet food or treat, you can report it to the FDA through their website or by calling the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at 240-402-7002.

Giving bones to dogs can pose significant risks to their health, including gastrointestinal blockages, choking, mouth injuries, vomiting, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and even death. It is best to avoid giving bones as treats and opt for safer chew toys or treats made from different materials. Always supervise your dog when introducing new toys or treats, and consult your veterinarian if you notice any abnormal behavior in your pet. If you encounter any problems with pet food or treats, you can report them to the FDA for investigation.
