Toxicities: How Rat Poison Harms Cats

We want to bring your attention to a significant hazard that might be present in and around your homes: bromethalin-based rat poison. As rodent control remains a crucial concern, newer rat poisons have entered the market, posing a serious threat to our beloved pets.

Understanding Bromethalin

Bromethalin, introduced in 1985, acts by disrupting brain metabolism, leading to cerebral edema and ultimately, death. This poison is sold in various forms such as bars, blocks, and pellets for rats and mice, as well as in earthworm-shaped baits for moles. The poison can cause two forms of poisoning in pets: the convulsant form, which results in hyperexcitability, muscle tremors, increased body temperature, and seizures; and the paralytic form, characterized by vomiting, weakness, uncoordinated movements, nystagmus (involuntary eye movement), and paralysis.

Immediate Action is Crucial

If your pet has ingested bromethalin, immediate action is essential. Inducing vomiting and administering activated charcoal can help limit absorption. However, treatment must be aggressive and must start within an hour of ingestion. Muscle contractions are managed with sedatives and muscle relaxants, while brain swelling is addressed with diuretics. Nutritional support might be necessary, and some patients may require an esophagostomy tube for feeding.

No Antidote

Unlike older anticoagulant rodenticides, bromethalin poisoning lacks a specific antidote. This means that prevention is crucial. Ensure that any rat poison, especially bromethalin-based products, is kept out of reach of your pets. Consider alternative, pet-friendly methods of rodent control if you have animals in your vicinity.

Stay Vigilant

If you suspect your pet has ingested rat poison or if you notice any unusual symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately. Time is of the essence, and quick action can make a significant difference in your pet's prognosis.

Let's work together to keep our pets safe from this silent threat.
