Care & Husbandry: The Keys to Litter Box Care & Maintenance

Cats are meticulous animals, and providing the right litter box environment is crucial for their well-being. Here are essential guidelines to ensure your cat's litter box experience is comfortable and conducive to good hygiene:

Location, Location, Location

Place litter boxes in multiple locations throughout the house, and consider having one on each floor if possible. Avoid moving the boxes around to prevent confusion.

Depth Matters

Experiment with different depths of litter, ranging from 1-1.5 inches. Most cats prefer this depth, but some might like deeper litter. Stick to the preferred depth for each box once identified.

Negative Associations

Keep litter boxes away from noisy appliances to prevent frightening your cat. Avoid administering medications or unpleasant experiences near the litter box area.

Separate Eating and Elimination Areas

Place food and water dishes in a separate room or at least 5 feet away from the litter boxes. Cats prefer clean elimination spaces and won't appreciate sharing their dining area with the litter box.

Litter-Box Criteria

Number of Boxes

Provide one litter box per cat in the household, plus one additional box. For instance, a home with three cats should have at least four litter boxes.

Scented or Unscented

Use unscented clumping litter, which is preferred by most cats. Scented litters can be unpleasant and painful due to cats' sensitive sense of smell.

Clay Versus Other

Stick to traditional clumping litter as it is generally preferred over alternative options like corn or wheat litter, especially in cases of illness or stress.

Size Matters

Opt for large-sized litter boxes that allow cats to move comfortably. Older or arthritic cats might prefer boxes with low walls or a low-cut door to minimize discomfort.

Keep it Open

Remove covers from litter boxes, as most cats feel uncomfortable in covered boxes. An open environment provides a sense of security.

Keep it Clean

Scoop litter once to twice daily, or even more frequently if possible. Completely empty and clean the litter tray every one to two weeks. Use a mild detergent, rinse thoroughly, and ensure it's completely dry before adding fresh litter.

By adhering to these guidelines, you create a clean, comfortable, and inviting space for your cat, promoting regular litter box usage and overall feline happiness.
