Shreveport

Here in Shreveport, we love our pets! Shreveport is a city with a lot to offer humans and their furry (or feathery or scaly) companions. Shreveport is situated along the Red River in Caddo and Bossier Parishes. As the center of the Ark-La-Tex region, this northwestern Louisiana city is just 188 miles from Dallas, 215 miles from Little Rock, and 250 miles from Baton Rouge. As you will soon see, living in Shreveport offers its perks.

Shreveport is known for its casinos and gambling. In fact, many people like to come to the city to explore riverboat gambling options. Of course, you will also have the opportunity to enjoy Ark-La-Tex culture, delicious food, and rich history in our city.

Shreveport is considered an urban area, especially as it is the third-largest city in Louisiana.  As a result, there are plenty of fun ways to enjoy local festivities and honor holidays. Local festivals and events include Cork Premier Wine Tasting, Mudbug Madness Festival, Ark-La-Tex Ambassadors BBQ Cook Off, and the Red River Revel Arts Festival. The local Mardi Gras festival dates back to the mid-1800s and offers parades and other festivities. Additionally, many local festivals offer plenty of pet-friendly fun as well.

The economy of Shreveport has developed thanks to the oil industry. Companies with a significant presence in Shreveport include AT&T, Capital One, UPS, APS Payroll, and Chase Bank. Additionally, Shreveport is also known as a major gambling center in Louisiana. The film industry has also played a role in the development of the economy, with many films shooting in the city over the years.

Shreveport was originally established with the goal of creating a meeting point on the Texas Trail. Captain Henry Miller Shreve was able to clear the Red River to make it easier to navigate by removing a natural log jam. Shreve Town was named after him, and its name was changed to Shreveport in 1839 when it was officially incorporated. During the Civil War, Shreveport became Louisiana’s capital.

You may know that Shreveport has been home to several notable people over the years. They include actor and football player Alan Autry, MLB pitcher Scott Baker, NFL quarterback Terry Bradshaw, defense attorney Johnnie Cochran, and country singer Hank Williams, Jr.

The population of Shreveport is approximately 192,036. This makes Shreveport one of the biggest cities in Louisiana, at least with the 2017 data in mind.  In recent years, the population of the city has been in a slight decline.
