Pomona

Here in Pomona, we really love our pets!

Pomona is a city situated in Los Angeles County. Nestled between the Inland Empire and the San Gabriel Valley, our city offers a lot. We are probably best known for being the host of Cal Poly Pomona, but we are much more than a college city. We are just 30 miles from Los Angeles and 22 miles from San Bernardino. Our Mediterranean climate gives us mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. We occasionally get Santa Ana winds too.

Local attractions include the Ygnacio Palomares Adobe, Phillips Mansion, La Casa Primera de Rancho San Jose, Pomona Fox Theater, and American Museum of Ceramic Art. Local cemeteries also evoke local history.

In Pomona, you will find many annual cultural events at the Fairplex. In fact, we also host the L.A. County Fair and the Pomona Swap Meet and Classic Car Show. Locals also love visiting the NHRA Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

The economy of Pomona encompasses many industries, including healthcare and education. Our top employers include the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, Pomona Unified School District, Cal Poly, Fairplex, and the City of Pomona. Educational institutions make our city a great place to study.

Pomona was established in the 1830s with the arrival of Ricardo Vejar and Ygnacio Palomares. Then, the region was under Mexican rule. Our city was named after the Roman goddess of fruit after a contest was held to name the city in 1875. This was long before the region had any fruit trees. Railroads arrived in the area in the 1880s, and the city became officially incorporated in 1888. Soon our city was known as the Queen of the Citrus Belt thanks to its fruit trees.

Several notable people have lived in Pomona over the years. They include actress Jessica Alba, author Richard Armour, author Jim Chandler, baseball player Mike Frank, author Jim Keith, MLB player Mark McGwire, singer-songwriter and composer Tom Waits, and basketball coach Dedrique Taylor. Our city is close to Los Angeles and many educational institutions, so we offer a great location to learn more about the science and art communities.

The population of Pomona is about 153,000 according to 2017 statistics. The population has grown by over two percent since 2000. We welcome our population growth because it brings in more pets and people. We expect to see our community continue to grow in the coming years.
